Privacy policy: To Buy or To Rent

Last updated: 23 October 2026

The short version

To Buy or To Rent is a calculator. It has no accounts, no ads, no analytics, no tracking and no crash reporting. The numbers you type stay on your phone. We (the developer) never receive them.

What the app stores, and where

The app saves the following on your phone only, in the app's private storage:

None of this is sent to us or to anyone else. It is not included in Android cloud backup, so it does not move to a new phone. Most of the figures you enter are not personal data on their own, but some (such as your income or age) could be, which is why they never leave the device.

Internet use

The app connects to the internet for one purpose: to download public interest-rate statistics from the Bank of England's website (www.bankofengland.co.uk), over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. This happens when the app starts or returns to the screen (at most every six hours) and when you tap "Check for new rates".

These requests contain no information about you and nothing you have typed. They include the app's name and version so the Bank of England's website accepts them. As with any website visit, the Bank of England's servers can see your phone's IP address; how the Bank handles that is covered by its own privacy notice. We do not receive it.

Sharing a summary

If you tap Share summary, Android's share menu opens with a text summary of your scenario. Nothing is sent unless you choose an app (such as email or a messaging app) and send it yourself. What happens next is governed by that app's privacy policy.

Permissions

The app asks Android for one permission: internet access, for the rate download above. It does not use your location, contacts, camera, microphone, photos, files or any other personal data on your phone.

Children

The app is intended for adults making housing decisions. It is not aimed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.

Your rights

Because we do not collect or hold any personal data about you, there is nothing for us to access, correct or delete on our side. Everything is on your phone and under your control, as described above. You have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be published at the same address with a new "last updated" date. If a change would mean collecting any data, the app will tell you before it happens.
